Maite Fernández studied Translation and Interpreting at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and did an MA in Translation and Transcultural Studies at the University of Warwick (UK). She has worked as a translator for various international organisations, mostly within the United Nations system. As a literary translator, she has mainly translated classics (Guy de Maupassant, Edith Wharton, Henry James, Herman Melville, Kate Chopin). In addition to articles on translation, she has published some of her own texts in various journals. In 1999, she won the Manzanares River Prize and published Los cuadernos de Özbek (Morandi, 1999). In 2013 she was a finalist for the Cosecha Eñe prize. She ran a reading club in Madrid for many years and started another on Danish literature translated into English while living in Copenhagen.

Since 2014, she coordinates the Translation Area of the school Billar de Letras in Madrid, where she has taught different workshops on literary translation. Drawing on this experience, in 2019 she published Taller de traducción. Guía práctica y poética para la traducción de libros del inglés al español, with Alba Editorial.
