Győző Ferencz is professor emeritus of Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest. Between 1983 and 2020 he taught Irish and English literature at the Department of English Studies. He is also a critic, literary historian and editor.
He has been publishing poetry and literary criticism for over four decades. His selected and new poems came out in 2018 and received warm critical acclaim. Some of his poems translated into English appeared in the anthology The Colonnade of Teeth. Modern Hungarian Poetry (1996, translated. by George Szirtes). His poems were translated into Scots by Tom Hubbard (Minorotie Status, 2017).
He has extensively translated Irish, English, American and Scottish poets, including John Donne, William Wordsworth, John Berryman, Seamus Heaney, Tony Harrison. He has edited and annotated several poetry anthologies.
Győző Ferencz has been the executive president of Széchenyi Academy of Letters and Arts (an organization similar to Aoisdana) since 2009. The Academy has been organizing The Seamus Heaney Memorial Lecture series since 2013. Invited speakers were, among others, Medbh McGuckian, Paul Muldoon, Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin, and Fintan O’Toole. He was elected member of the Academia Europaea in 2012.
He has been awarded several literary prizes including the International Poetry Prize of European Poetical Tournament, Maribor, Slovenia (2011), and the Hungarian Order of Knight’s Cross (2015).
